Greetings to all nurses who are members of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine!
I would like to take a moment and express how honored and at the same time excited I am for the opportunity to serve as the Nurses Professional Group (NPG) Chair for 2021-2022. I look forward to working closely with the remarkable and dedicated members of the NPG Executive Committee. We, along with your support and efforts, are working hard to implement the mission of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) that strives to be the national and international leader for multidisciplinary information, education, advocacy, and standards in reproductive medicine and science, with the goal of ensuring accessible, ethical, and quality reproductive care for every person.
As one of ASRMs professional groups, The NPG was created to support and advance the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s goal to have the greatest global impact on reproductive care. Those who are members of the NPG understand that our work within the ASRM focuses on initiatives to support education and research, evidenced-based patient care, and the professional development of all reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) nurses.
Our current initiatives are well received. Because education is one of ASRM’s missions and integral to nursing care, many of our NPG initiatives focus on the continuing education needs of our membership through multiple platforms. One significant opportunity is the Nurse Certificate Course in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. It was created specifically for nurses and nurse practitioners by experts in the field of REI medicine. To date, over 1,600 fertility nurses have received specialized training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) through ASRM airLearning platform. I can personally attest to the quality and value of the Nurse Certificate Course, which I successfully completed this past year. Furthermore, when more than half of all nurses at a center successfully complete this certification, that center receives the designation of being a Nursing Center of Excellence. These centers can then display the emblem of this designation on their websites, marketing materials, and highlight the names of nurses who have completed the course. Other educational opportunities available to NPG members include Nursing Grand Rounds Webinars, which can be accessed via the ASRM website.
Another wonderful opportunity for our membership is attendance at the annual ASRM Scientific Congress and Expo. Nurses can use this opportunity to enhance their learning, either via pre-Congress courses or main conference sessions. Most of these sessions are multidisciplinary, and nursing has a strong voice and presence in these diverse topics. Roundtables during conference are a way nurses can interact with thought leaders in a more informal, intimate setting.
Nursing also has a dedicated podium session focused on nursing research. Presenters discuss cutting edge research and quality improvement projects and provide a rich opportunity to share innovative thinking between settings. For those in our NPG membership who have an interest in contributing their own work, we welcome abstract submissions for the conference, which are typically due in April or May preceding the October Congress & Expo. Our peer-reviewed process allows strong nursing scholars the opportunity to present (either via podium or poster) to their colleagues, further giving strong voice to the important work that fertility nurses contribute to this scientific community. Our upcoming conference is set to be a very exciting one indeed! I hope you can attend!
Another benefit of membership in the NPG is the ability to increase networking. Some of this can be done at the annual conference; NPG will be hosting a reception for all nurses who are members of ASRM. Additionally, the NPG discussion forum, the first ASRM professional group to launch the updated group website, allows members increased partnership, information exchange, and networking in a more user-friendly way throughout the year.
Reproductive medicine is one of the most dynamic areas in health care. Active membership in the ASRM and the NPG is a perfect way to help keep informed through these learning, research, and networking opportunities. On behalf of the NPG Executive Board, we are grateful you are here. We are excited to get to know you, and work to meet your needs.
