Letter from the Chair

I am excited for the opportunity to serve the NPG as Chair for 2019. I consider a great honor and privilege to work with the elected board. We are a diverse, smart and innovative group of professionals who are focused to strengthen support for the nurse membership, advocate for nursing within ASRM, and create new opportunities to build strong working relationships and collaborations.

As one of ASRM's professional groups, The Nurses’ Professional Group (NPG) was created to support and advance the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s goal to have the greatest global impact on reproductive care. Those who are members of the NPG understand that our work within the ASRM focuses on initiatives to support education and research, evidenced-based patient care, and the professional development of all reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) nurses.

Our current initiatives are well received. Because education is one of our missions, many of our initiatives focus on the continuing education needs of our membership through multiple platforms. One significant opportunity is the Nurse Certificate Course in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. It was created specifically for nurses and nurse practitioners by experts in the field of REI medicine. To date, over 1,000 fertility nurses have received specialized training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) through ASRM airLearning platform. Further, when more than half of all nurses at a center successfully complete this certification, that center receives the designation of being a Nursing Center of Excellence. These centers can then display the emblem of this designation on their websites, marketing materials, and highlight the names of nurses who have completed the course. Other educational opportunities available to NPG members include Nursing Grand Rounds Webinars, which can be accessed via the ASRM website.

Another wonderful opportunity for our membership is attendance at the annual ASRM Scientific Congress and Expo. Nurses can use this opportunity to enhance their learning, either via pre-Congress courses or main conference sessions. Most of these sessions are multidisciplinary, and nursing has a strong voice in these diverse topics. Roundtables during conference are a way nurses can interact with thought leaders in a more informal, intimate setting. Nursing also has a dedicated podium session focused on nursing research. Presenters discuss cutting edge research and quality improvement projects and provide a rich opportunity to share innovative thinking between settings. For those in our NPG membership who have an interest in contributing their own work, we welcome abstract submissions for the conference! Our peer-reviewed process allows strong nursing scholars the opportunity to present (either via podium or poster) to their colleagues, further giving strong voice to the important work that fertility nurses contribute to this scientific community. Our upcoming conference is set to be a very exciting one indeed! The 75th ASRM Scientific Congress & Expo will be October 12-16, 2019 in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Please be sure to mark your calendars!

Another benefit of membership in the NPG is the ability to increase networking. Some of this can be done at the annual conference; NPG hosts a reception for our membership, and we also co-host a reception along with ARM, LPG and MHPG, providing a rich opportunity to build multidisciplinary relationships. Additionally, the NPG discussion forum, the first ASRM professional group to launch the updated group website, allows members increased partnership, information exchange, and networking in a more user-friendly way.

Reproductive medicine is one of the most dynamic areas in health care. Nurses must stay contemporary with their knowledge of the evidence and practice changes. Active membership in the ASRM and the NPG is a perfect way to help keep you informed through these learning, research and networking opportunities. On behalf of the NPG board, we are grateful you are here. We are excited to get to know you, and work to meet your needs.

We all look forward to seeing you all in Philadelphia!
